Martha Heineman Pieper, Ph.D. and
William Joseph Pieper, M.D.

Martha Heineman Pieper, Ph.D., and William J. Pieper, M.D are two of
the country’s top parenting and child psychology experts. The Piepers
are co-authors of numerous articles and books, including Intrapsychic
Humanism: An Introduction to a Comprehensive Psychology and Philosophy
of Mind
(Falcon II Press, 1990); Smart Love: The Compassionate Alternative
to Discipline that Will Make You a Better Parent and Your Child a Better
(Harvard Common Press, 1999,), and Addicted to Unhappiness:
Free Yourself from Moods and Behaviors that Undermine Relationships,
Work, and the Life You Want
(McGraw-Hill, 2002, 2004). The Piepers
also write a monthly column called Smart Love, for Chicago Parent. For
over thirty years they have conducted clinical research and been in private
practice treating children, adolescents, and adults, counseling parents,
and supervising other mental health professionals. Parents of five children,
the authors live in Chicago.

Martha Heineman Pieper graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum
Laude from Radcliffe College, and received her Ph.D. in clinical social work
from the University of Chicago. She has served on the editorial board of
professional journals such as Illinois Child Welfare, Social Work and Smith
College Studies in Social Work. In addition to her clinical writings she has
published extensively on the topic of philosophy of research. She is on
the Board of Directors of the Smart Love Family Services and the
Intrapsychic Humanism Society.

William J. Pieper received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University
of Illinois. He completed residencies in adult psychiatry at the University
of Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute in Chicago and in child and adolescent
psychiatry at the Institute for Juvenile Research in Chicago. In 1975, he
graduated from the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis with certificates
in child and adult psychoanalysis. He has taught at the University of
Chicago, School of Social Service Administration and in the Institute for
Psychoanalysis adult and child psychotherapy programs. He is on the
Board of Directors of the Intrapsychic Humanism Society.
